Mold number 2001 I, cataloged as "Book Spines for Evangelical Theologians, " and one of the Mettlach Book Spine or Book Stein series, with artwork attributed to the famous German artist, Otto Hupp.

This example has a known, art nouveau, stylized thumblift. A must have to complete your entire book stein collection. Information quoted here draws from the online Beer Stein Library [credit to their site for inlay lid translations and more information than you could ever hope to learn about collecting antique beer steins].

Inlay lid text, "Die Wartburg" translates to, "The Wartburg, " referencing the Wartburg Castle, Eisenach, Germany. This castle, thought to have been started to be built around 1067 AD, is where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible from ancient Greek into German. Luther's translation at the Castle is the reason for its featuring on the inlay lid. The book spines titles and authors are all historical, theological texts that a contemporary, evangelical would be familiar with / would have studied.

Part of, and 9th in order of a very collectible / desirable, set of 12 "book steins" that are harder and harder to find / assemble in excellent condition. The mini-series of steins honor the esteemed professions of the late and early 19th century.
