MAJOLICA HERRING HANGOVER CURE LIDDED BEER STEIN Rare Limited Edition of 5,000 by THEWALT OF GERMANY. High relief herrings with a monkey and a cat peeping through the fish tails adorn this hand painted character beer stein. Monkeys and cats have long symbolized the wickedness of a hangover (to have a monkey on your back) in German folklore, while a sour herring is purported to be the cure-all. Around the base the stein reads: Den groessten Kater (literally the'biggest cat' or hangover), lehrt Erfahrung, bezwingt ein guter sauer Harung. " around the base, which translates as: "Experience teaches that a good sour herring cures the biggest hangover. This figural beer stein has a stoneware lid continuing the hand painted herring motif.

An arched cat sits atop a beer barrel on the pewter thumb lift and a monkey's head peers out of the stylized stoneware handle. Features 24K gold & silver highlights. Limited edition of 5,000 individually numbered pieces Worldwide! Stamped and numbered on the bottom (see photos). Sadly, Thewalt ceased production in October of 2009.

The stein measures approximately 8.75 tall and holds about half a liter. Has been used over the years, but is in great condition with no apparent chips, cracks or repairs.
