Large Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer Stein Medieval Tavern Scene Regensburg c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called "Regensburg" type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels - they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them "Model" steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterwards to make the insides perfectly round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface.
The stein is circa the 1870s. The relief decor on the front of the stein shows men in Medieval clothes raising steins with beer at the tavern table. The side scenes show gnomes holding shields with sayings. All three saying (including the on on front) sayings call for moderate drinking: Halt Maß und Ziel, trink nie zuviel.
Maintain measure and moderation, never drink too much. Mäßig trinken Lieder singen half von je zu guten Dingen. Drinking moderately and singing songs has always brought good things. "Das beste Mass ist mittel Strass" (The best measure is middle path). The lid is pewter with the thumblift sitting on the lid and three-ring open type hinge consistent with the late 1870s dating.
The porcelain inlay in the lid show a well-painted miniature of a beautiful deer running through thge forest. The stein is in excellent condition. There are some minor manufacturing flaws and - the pottery was mostly manual job, but no chips, cracks or repairs whatsoever. The flake on the lower rim that you can see on the picture of the bottom is glazed over - it's a factory issue, not damage. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with over 150 years of history behind it. It is large than usual, standing 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
