Wonderful embossed salt glazed beer or claret jug from the Westerwald region of Germany, stands about 12" tall, and measures about 5" across at the widest part. Fashioned of traditional gray stone ware, with rich cobalt blue accents, the jug features eight embossed panels which depict a story with medieval people and scenes, along with a message in German, winding around the jug.
While there is a distinctive black mark on the base, we are not sure that this is a factory mark, and there are no other marks to trace the piece to a pottery or time period. While there are a few small "flea bite" chips to the surface, and some signs or rust to the pewter lid, the jug is in good as found estate condition, with no real damages or losses.
Furnished with a pewter lid and a fabulous embossed thumb piece depicting the bearded head of a creature, we think that the jug dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. A fine addition to a collection, the jug is offered with out reserve. This item is in the category "Collectibles\Breweriana, Beer\Drinkware, Steins\Lidded Steins\Germany".
