Antique Stoneware German Beer Stein Bavarian Trade Show w/Munich Child c. Description: Antique German beer stein made of saltglazed stoneware.
Decorated with enamel painting of some different occupational tools and the inscription: "Bayrische Gewerbeschau Munchen 1912". There is a picture of Munich Child underneath the tools - that was the symbol of the city of Munich.
The Bavarian Trade Show in 1912 was a unique one time event that intended to show the German and foreign public the efficiency and quality of Bavarian handcrafts and Bavarian industries. It was a big deal at the time, many posters, postcards and even postmarks were issued to celebrate the Show. There was a similar show in 1922, after the WWI in Munich but that time it was all German show, not just Bavarian. The lid is pewter with the Trade show dedication - it was made for this specific stein. The design is not signed but judging from some evidence I think it was made by Paul Neu - a prominent grafic designer of the period who also made some posters for the Show..
