Antique Mettlach Villeroy & Boch. Beer Stein 2430 3L Old German Drinker with Saying Germany 1899. This is a beautifully etched 3 Liter stein by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach, Germany in 1899.The scene depicts a hunter drinking beer with the writing Die Kehl kostt veel! Which loosely translates to It costs much to quench a thirst. The rest of the body is decorated with grape vines. The top inlay has a nice pattern with a glazed decorative knob (I believe a barley grain) and a thumb lift with a face engraved. This would make a fantastic addition to your collection! On the bottom, it has the standard Mettlach Abby mark along with the Villeroy & Boch mark and the Mercury Mark (slightly faded). It also has 23 and 14 markings for quality control and 99 year code 1899. The stein measures 16-1/2'' height x diameter of 7 at the base and 4 1/2'' at the mouth. There is also a D stamped and 15 in ink on the bottom. This stein has been well-cared for and is in very good condition for a 120-year-old piece - there are no cracks, chips or crazing. It does show some wear in the normal places and the pewter. Lid has a beautiful patina. There are a couple minor spots where the artist over-painted, but these dont detract from the steins appearance. I have not cleaned this more than a dusting with a soft cloth. From a smoke free home.
