Antique German Stoneware Character Beer Stein by S. Gerz - Monk #194 c. Description: This interesting and quite rare beer stein was manufactured in around the 1880s. It belongs to the "character" stein family - beer steins made in form of things or persons. This is probably the most collectible category of antique beer steins. The stein is made in the form of a happy laughing monk. This stein is different from the many other - it is made of saltglazed stoneware but is not glazed with cobalt-blue glaze like the majority of them, exposing the natural color of the clay. The "monk" character steins were very popular in Germany because usually the monasteries and monks were associated with beer brewing and drinking. I would suggest it was made by S.
This particular variation of monk - the smaller size and the diffrent face features - doesn't come up very often. The stein is in excellent flawless mint condition, no damage, no repairs. The lid fits perfectly well with no wobbling. It is a smaller stein, standing 5.5 tall to the top of the head, 0.3L capacity. Please note - the thumblift is not missing - many monk steins were made without pewter thumblift, the head was suppused to act as it.
