Antique German Beer Stein Regensburg Style Mettlach Mold Cologne Cathedral c. Description: This antique German beer stein/pitcher was made in 1880.
This date is consistent with the technology and also is the date of the completion of the Cologne Cathedral - the cathedral the stein is dedicated to. This mold is the same mold we see in some Mettlach ware - specifically, some pokals and early steins see a scan from "The Mettlach Book" in pics. It show all three relief pictures that are exactly the same. The front medallion shows a woman holding the Cathedral - most likely she repersent the Holy Virgin. One side medallion shows the Three Kings following the Bethlehem Star. The relics of the Three Kings were aquired by the Bishop of Cologne in 1147, and the Cathedral was supposued to keep the relics. Another side medallion shows a Medieval cathedral builder refreshing himself with a fresh brew after work. The Cologne Dome is one of the most famous and the largest church building in the world.
Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 but was halted in 1473, unfinished. Work did not restart until the 1840s, and the edifice was completed to its original Medieval plan in 1880. The completion of the construction in 1880 was widely celebrated all over Germany.
