Antique German Jugendstil Beer Stein Stoneware Enameled Bavarian Humorous Theme sign. Description: Great stein in Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. Classical saltglazed stoneware with enameled decorations. Designed by Franz Ringer - he was the most famous Jugendstil artist and designer who actually created this style - inspired by Jugendstill/Art Nouveau historically stylized in early 1800s aesthetics called Biedermeier.

A prominent painter and sculptor from Munich, he also created many well-known beer steins for Marzi and Remy, Villeroy and Boch Mettlach, Reinhold Merkelbach and many others. The picture in the front medallion depicts a Bavarian gentleman talking to a waitress holding several beer steins.

The inscription reads: Koane 3 quartl -- I mocht a Mass -- hast mi verstandn -- da kenn I koan spass.. It is written in Bavarian dialect of German but I was able to find a translator. The picture is drawn in typical Franz Ringer cartoonish style and clearly means some joke - maybe the joke the use of the Bavarian dialect itself.

The stein is signed with the famous Franz Ringer signature "FR" and number 31 - this is the design number. The lid is pewter designed as well in this specific Jugendstil style. There is no mark on the bottom, but most likely the stein was made by Merkelbach and Wick. There is a monogram on the back of the stein with initials M. This is the decorator's initials.

The stein is in excellent condition with some minimal age-related wear. This is a rare design - some F. Ringer designes were more common, this one shows up less frequently. It is 7.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
