It was designed in a very specific manner that was called Jugendstil - the unique German version of Art Nouveau - the new aesthetics that took over the world in the late 1800s - early 1900s. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware with cobalt blue glaze - the very traditional Westerwald ware in the distinctive Jugendstil aesthetics. I attribute the design to Paul Wynand - a well-know Jugendbstil ceramics deisgner who worked wth major beer stein manufacturers such us Steinzeug Coblenz, Reinhold Merkelbach, Marzi and Remy, S. But I could be wrong - it is hard to attribute, many Jugendstil designers used each other's elemnts and patterns.
