Antique German HR Hauber & Reuther Porcelain Beer Stein #418 Etched Lohengrin Scene c. This beautiful antique beer stein was made by Hauber & Reuther (HR) manufacturing company.The steins produced by HR are ones of the most collectible and desirable for the excellent quality and also rarity. The stein is made of special HR tan stoneware and decorated in "etched" technique - the contours of the drawing look like they are engraved - thus creating a very attractive decoration. With Mettlach steins, but there were some other manufacturers that used this technology.
It was very labor-intensive and expensive but produced excellent results. The stein's etched decorations depicts a scene taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the Swan Knight. Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera Lohengrin, first performed at Weimar in 1850. In this scene, Lohengrin arrives on his swan boat, just in time to save Elsa, daughter of the late Duke of Brabant, from the clutches of the evil knight Friedrich of Telramund. Nice heavy ornate pewter lid.
Mold number 418, 10.5 to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. Excellent condition with some minimal age-related wear. Condition: Excellent w/minor age-related wear.
