Antique German Faience Beer Stein Hanau Factory Birnkrug with Architecture c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the mid-1700s. The stein was made in the factory of Hanau - one of the oldest faience factory in Germany. It was established in 1661 and closed in 1806. The stein was painted by one of the factory decorators who created a very simple but beautiful blue on white picture with a view on a house with a tower, and trees. The steins of this shape are called in Germany "Birnskrug" - "pear-shaped stein". Although the Hanau factory produced some faience in more colorful ways, the majority of their ware was dome in blue over white glaze in some sort of a Delft manner. Nice pewter lid with a hollow ball for the thumblift. Five-ring closed type hinge with uneven rings - a good sign of the early- to mid-1700s.

Beautiful piece of beer drinking culture over 270 years old. There is no cracks or chips, just some age-related glaze flakes on the top rim. This is a good condition - I would even say excellent - for a faience item this old. This is a smaller stein - it is 7 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 0.4L capacity.
