Antique German Character Beer Stein Owl by HR Hauber and Reuther #64 c. Description: This amazing beer stein was manufactured in the 1880s by Hauber and Reuther - one of the most famous beer stein manufacturers of the "Golden Era" of German beer stein production.
It belongs to the "character" stein family - beer steins made in form of things or persons. This is probably the most collectible category of antique beer steins.The stein is made in the form of a Owl - that was the symbol of wisdom and scholarliness in old Germany. It was often associated with students and their favorite activity - drinking beer. It is made in traditional grey saltglazed stoneware with magenta and cobal-blue glazes.
There is no manufcturers mark, only the model number "64". However , this stein is attributed to HR and the "L" mark is one of the HR decorator's initials from the period of 1878 - 1882.The stein is in excellent condition with only some age-related wear. The hinge is missing one ring but is working great. The lid sits perfectly tight. It is 8 tall, 0.5 L capacity.
