Antique German Character Beer Stein Munich Child by Merkelbach & Wick 0.25L c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural". This particular one is made in a shape of the Munich Child - the child monk that was the symbol of the city of Munich for about 800 years.
The Child is holding a beer stein with initials "HB" for the most famous Munich brewery "Hofbrauhaus", and an bunch of rdishes - the most popular beer snack in old Germany. It was made by Merkelbach and Wick - one of the most famous beer stein makers. It was founded in 1872 by Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II b. 1896 & Sculptor & Modeller, (Johann) Georg Peter Wick b. The company existed until 1921 when it became Wick Werke after merging with several other companies. This stein is one o f a several Munich Child character stein produced by M&W, model number 2009. The stein is made of pottery with pewter mounts and hand-colored.The mark on the bottom says "Gesetzlich Geschutzt" - "Patent protected". There is another mark - J. Reinemann that belongs to Josef Reinemann in Munich - a well-known wholesaler and decorator firm of the period. It is 6 tall, 0.25L capacity.
The stein was made in different sizes. This is the a smaller, 0.25L version of it. Please note that I have also a larger, 0.5L version. Please look through my auctions.
