Antique German Character Beer Stein - Bearded Monk with Hood by Merkelbach and Wick #270 c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural".

This particular one is made in a shape of a monk wearing his robe with a rosary on his side. His head forms the lid - he has a beard and is wearing a hood. This variation of monk stein is much rarer than the usual smiling monks wearing caps.

Monks were always associated with brewing and beer drinking, so a stein in the form of a monk was the most popular character stein in Germany. Made of the tan pottery with magenta glaze and pewter mounts. Excellent flawless condition - no chips, cracks. Some minor age-related scuffs on the pewter.

This is a full size half-liter stein - it is 6.7 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0,5L capacity. Please note - I have also a smaller (and less expensive) 0.3L version of the same monk (in saltglazed stoneware). I have several different types of monk character steins.
