Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Stone Ruby Red Flashed and Cut Saxon Switzerland c. Description: This very interesting stein was made around the 1870s.

It is made of blown crystal glass flashed with deep ruby-red color. It was then stone-cut to make vertical facets as well as round medallions creating a beautiful optical effects.

The sides of the steins are copper-wheel engraved - this was a technique that required some serious skills and created beautiful art work. There are several panels with wheel-engraved views of the landmarks of the so-called This is a so-called "Spa" or souvenier stein - the steins of this type were made to commemorate somebody's visit to a spa town. The area called (Saxon Switzerland or Sächsische Schweiz in German) was a mountain resort area popular with many people in Germany as well as from other countries.

The ruby-flashed squares of the stein's body are nicely and skilfully copper-whell engraved with the views of some villages and landmarks of the area: Konigstein, Schweizermuhle, Prebischthor, Kuhstall, etc. This type of glass beer steins was very common in the 1850s - 1870s. The steins of this kind came mostly from Bohemia. Five ring closed type hinge.

The lid is pewter with a clear stone-cut glass inlay. The stein is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. There is some minor age-related wear to the red.
