Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Stone Ruby Red Flashed and Cut Friendship Gift c. Description: This very interesting stein was made around mid-1800s - in 1860s-early 1870s. It is made of blown crystal glass flashed with deep ruby-red color.
It was then stone-cut to make vertical and horizontal facets creating square medallions with a charming optical effect. The medallions are copper-wheel engraved - this was a technique that required some serious skills and created beautiful art work. There are several panels with wheel-engraved pictures and inscriptions. In the top row there are picrtures of Cornucopia, musical instrumens and caduceus - the medical symbol. The inscriptions respectively read: "Glueck", "Freude", "Gesundheit" - "Luck", "Joy" and "Health" The middle panel reads: "Umwinde ihre Lebenszeit" - "Encircle" your lifetime. Apparently, the stein was intended as a friendship gift with these good wishes. This type of glass beer steins was very common in 1860s. The steins of this kind came mostly from Bohemia. Five ring closed type hinge. The lid is pewter with a clear glass inlay and small "feather" type thumblift typical for mid-1800s. The stein is in excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. There is some minor age-related wear to the red. The rough ending of the bottom of the handle is normal - that's the way they made handles in those days. The stein is 6.25 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
