Antique German Jugendstil Beer Stein R. Riemerschmid #1741 Golf Theme c. Description: This German beer stein is quite famous - it was designed by Richard Riemerschmid - he is considered as one of the most important Jugendstil (German version of Art Nouveau) designers - probably THE most inportant artist of this style.The stein is featured in all the books dedicated to beer stein collecting and Jugendstil art style. The mold number is 1741. The design was made around 1902, the steins were made in 1905. The idea of the design is the shape of a ball with four flattened sides. The original Riemerschmid design featured impressed abstract medallions on the sides.
This stein's theme is golf - the center medallion shows a very specific golf cap of the early 1900s. The center and side medallions are encircled in wreaths designed as golf course meadow with grass and holes. The inscription on the sides - "Good Look" - also refers to the game of golf. In old Germany this type of mottos was always connected with a specific sports: "Gut Heil" for gymnastics, "Good Schuss" for the target shooting, "Gut Schlauch" for fencing and so forth. Most likely it was made by an order from Britain or the USA, the game of golf was not so very popular in Germany.
The lid is pewter - it's a very specific Merkelbach lid used exclusively on Jugendstil models. It is engraved with the owner's name - F.
