Antique German Art Nouveau/Jugendstil R. Merkelbach Beer Stein #2241 C. The artists who worked for R. Mueller and other famous designers and art professors of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil era. The stein is designed by Charlotte Krause - she was one of a very few women who worked as Jugendstil designer at this period. The stein is made of stoneware and glazed with "koelnisch braun" glaze - a very special glaze technique used by R. The lid is pewter - the signature Merkelbach lid used exclusively on his brown glaze Jugendstil steins. The stein is marked with R. Merkelbach Grenzhausen mark used from 1903 till 1936 and 2241 model number. There is also the "Krause" signature impressed - this is a rare case, the steins with the designer name like "Krause" or "Wynand" are extremely rare. Most likely they represent the first line of production.
