Antique Etched German Beer Stein Merkelbach/Wick Gnomes #1175A c. Description: This old stein was made by Merkelbach and Wick - one of the oldest and famous stein making factories located in Hohr-Grenzhausen. It was in business until 1921. The stein was manufactured in the late 1890s - early 1900ss and shows M&W manufacturing mark on the bottom. It is made in the "etched" technique - the contours of the drawing look like they are engraved - thus creating a very attractive decoration.
The etched technique is usually associated with Mettlach stein but there were some other manufacturers that used this technology. It was very labor-intensive and expensive but produced excellent results.
The stein depicts a very popular theme with a gnome drinker and another gnome as the innkeeper bringing him a stein of brew. This stein is one in the series of four steins of the same form and gnome theme designed by the same artist - 1175A, 1175B, 1175C and 1175D. This series is most likely the best steins Merkelbach and Wick ever produced.
The inscription reads: Quält dich ein Kummer, drückt dich ein Schmerz, Trinke zwölf Schoppen, leichter wirds Herz. If you have a problem, if something pains you. Drink twelve glasses of wine, the heart will be lighter. Great very ornate pewter lid engraved with a presentation inscription indicating the stein was a shooting competition prize to Musketer Tanzer in 1902.
Marked with MW manufacturing mark on the bottom and model number 1175A on the back. The stein is 9 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5 L capacity. The stein is in excellent flawless condition. Please note - I have another 1175 from the series!Get images that make Supersized seem small.
