Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Thueringen c. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the region of Thueringia - an old German state located in central Germany around late 1700s. Made of faience with very beautiful hand-painted decorations that traditionally are associated with Tueringen factories. The decorations are made in Chinese style - don't forget that faience was a cheaper substitute for very expensive porcelain that was exported mostly from China (with very limited European production) at the time and usually was associated with Chinese themes and subjects. There are several architectural motifs and two persons in the picture.
Very nice stylized painting of the factory artist. Nice pewter lid with a large hollow ball for the thumblift. It is marked with a pewterer's hallmark I was unable to identify. The bottom is also marked with underglazed "K" - this is the decorators mark most likely. The other marks are made over the glaze and are probably some museum or private collection marks. The body of the stein is in a fair condition - there are several hairlines and a body repair. The repairs were made professionally so the appearance is quite good. This is a relatively good condition for a beer stein that is over 200 years old - and with an interesting subject matter! It is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
