Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Kelsterbach w/Ribbed Body Floral c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1790s. The stein was made in the factory of Kelsterbach - one of the oldest faience factory in Germany. Kelsterbach situates within a close proximity to Hanau - THE oldest faience factory in Germany. I would say the stein was made in Hanau if not for the "K" mark on the botom that indicated Kelsterbach.
The stein is made from traditional light brown clay in the specific ribbed shape and glazed with light blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a very simple but beautiful dark blue decor in some way imitating the Chinese decorations on expensive imported Chinese porcelain. Nice pewter lid with five-ring closed type hinge and hollow ball thumblift. The lid is engraved with initials M.The bottom is marked with underglazed "K" - this is a Kelsterbach factory mark. A wonderful piece of beer drinking culture over 200 years old.
The stein is in a very good condition - there is a short hardly visible hairline approx. 1 long and a few flakes on the upper rim. This is a great condition for a faience piece this old - faience is very fragile. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
