Early Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Signed BFS c. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience with hand-painted decorations. It shows a fantasy bird surrounded by floral elements - nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. This particular decoration style - with a fantasy bird or a peacock sitting on a kind of rock and surrounded by paradise?
Garden flowers is the most typical for Bayreuth factory. Some other factories used this design as well (for some reason it was popular) but the Bayreuth one is very distinctive.Nice pewter lid with a medallion showing (I believe) the Adoration of Magi scene and with the hollow ball thumblift. This type of thumblifts was popular in the 1700s. The type of decoration and the shape of the lid and the thumblift suggest the stein was made close to the mid-1700s.
There is a mark on the bottom of the stein - handwritten "BFS". The Bayreuth faience steins were marked not always but quite often - much more often than steins from other factories. This particular mark belongs to the short period of 1745 - 1747 when the factory was owned by Frankel and Schreck families. The stein is in poor condition - it was broken in several places and glued together. But there is no missing pieces and no repainting. The pewter is in excellent condition. A beautiful antique vessel standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. The lid diameter is 4 exactly. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.
