Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved Wedding Gift dated 1799. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in early 1800s. It is a so-called "Walzenkrug" - a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in 1700s - early 1800s. The thumblift is a hollow ball - please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift is a very good sign of authenticity.

They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1830 - 1840 and there is no repros with hollow balls - I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The form of the base and the lid is usually associated with Saxonian pewter tradition. The stein is beautifully engraved in front and on the sides. It shows a man holding a beer stein (just like this one) in one hand and a high hat in the other. It was a wedding stein - the beer steins were very expensive at the time and considered perfect wedding gift that would stay with the married couple through all their lives.

There is an inscription that reads: Es lebe des Brautigam Stamm und auch der Braut ihr Haus. Auf diesen treuen Wunsch Trunck ich es alles Heraus. " - "Long live the bride and groom family and their house! Let all their wishes come true! The inside of lid shows pewterer's marks and town mark.

Unfortunately I do not have the reference material to identify the marks. All I can tell - it is definitely Saxonian.

The top of the lid is engraved with initials C. The stein is in incredibly good condition - it has some very minimal dings but no damage whatsoever - a rare condition for beer steins this old.

I guarantee my decription and dating - the stein is at least from 1799 - everything is original including the engraving. I have been collecting beer steins for many years and I can stand behind my words. The stein is 9.5 tall, 1L capacity.
