Antique German beer stein made by Villeroy and Boch/Mettlach. Made of pottery in PUG (print under glaze) technique unique to Mettlach. The stein depicts a procession of drinking companions led by the most famous King Gambrinus, the inventor of beer.
The processions destination, in this case, is the Krug zum grünen Kranze (Green Wreath Tavern), immortalized in a drinking song entitled Brüderschaft (Fraternity) written in 1821 by Wilhelm Müller and set to music by Carl Georg Peter Grädener. Nice and ornate pewter lid with a finial. In very good condition with the only flaw being a crack that runs through the hoisted beer tankard on the right side of the handle (see photo). The lid is sitting tight.
