Antique Mettlach Villeroy & Boch. Beer Stein 2581 ½L Song and Music Germany 1901.

This is a beautifully etched stein by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach, Germany in 1901. While only ½ Liter, the stein is larger than most as it has a large recessed cavity on the underside to accommodate the optional music box. The scene depicts women singing and playing the harp and mandolin. It was designed by Fritz Quidenus who was a.

Talented draftsman with a gift for narrative illustration, and not averse to turning his hand to the design of colorful scenes for Villeroy & Boch stoneware. The top inlay features a treble clef with a conductors baton and a lire shaped thumb lift. Signed on the lower left side of handle. On the bottom, it has the standard Mettlach Abby mark along with the Villeroy and Boch mark.

It also has 12 quality control and 01 year code 1901. The stein measures 8'' height x 4 1/2'' diameter. There is also a D stamped and 15 in ink on the bottom. A handwritten note found inside the stein provides some insight into its ownership and history.

He gave the stein to Mable Grau, whose husband Robert, was a music promoter at the turn of the century and also wrote the book Forty Years Observation of Music and the Drama, pub 1909. At some point, the stein made its way into the collection of Arthur Lazarus, the prominent DC attorney who represented Native Americans in many cases including winning a Supreme Court case for the Sioux Nation concerning the Black Hills. Lazarus had a small, but nice collection of steins including many Mettlachs.

Ive included the handwritten note and an article about Mr. This stein has been well-cared for and is in very good condition for a 120-year-old piece - there are no cracks, chips or crazing. It does show some wear in the normal places and the pewter.

Lid has a beautiful patina with a few rough spots around the inset. I have not cleaned this more than a dusting with a soft cloth. Please see description and photographs for more details. This would make a fantastic addition to your collection! From a smoke free home.
