Antique Mettlach Villeroy and Boch German Beer Stein #171 Relief Dancing Scenes 0.5L c. Description: This beautiful German beer stein stein was produced by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach well over 100 years ago. The stein's theme is the the seasons of the year - the five relief figures symbolize five seasons as them counted in old Germany.
The exceptionally crafted ceramics art object consits of gray clay body with applied blue background and applied off-white relief figures - a very complex and labor intensive technique. The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay showing the relief picture of a Cupid face. The stein is marked on the bottom with the mold number 171. There is no a stamped Mettlach Mercury mark and the mold number 171. Most likely the stein was made in 1870s - 1880s.The stein is in excellent flawless condition - a collector's dream! It is 7 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity.
Please note - this stein model #171 in its smaller, 0.25L is on of the most common Mettlach beer steins ever. It was so popular, it was made in very large quantities for several decades. However, this is only true for the 0.25L version. The 0.5L version - full size - is much more rare.
