Antique Jugendstil Art Nouveau German Beer Stein R. Merkelbach by Karl Goerig #1775 c. Made by Marzi and Remy. One of the most prominent Jugendstil beer stein manufacturers, the stein is designed in a style called Jugendstil - the German version of Art Nouveau, and represent the quintessential Jugendstil artifact, where geometrical elements and specific repeating patterns are combined with stylishly designed fonts.
The inscription reads: Füllen u. Fill up and empty, never be without it.
We don't know for sure who designed this particular stein but the patterns are commonly associated with Karl Goerig - a well-known and important Jugendstil designer who worked with Marzi and Remy, Reinhold Merkelbach, Merkelbach and Wick and some other prominent Jugendstil ceramics manufacturers. Made of pottery with gray glaze and cobalt-blue and dark-red decoration. The lid is inlaid with a ceramic inlay of the same patterns, creating a wonderful combination.The stein is in excellent condition. There is no damage whatsoever.
