The lid is massive pewter with a porcelain hand-painted inlay and ornate figural thumblift in the form of a horse head - typical late Bied ermeier style of the mid-1800s. The owner was most likely a horse care professional. The hinge is a five-ring open type, this type of the thumblifts appear in the 1870s.
The stein is in excellent for the age condition - there are no chips, cracks or even hairlines. The lid is sitting pretty tight.There are some clay impurities in the body but these are original due to the manual pre-industrial production. The lid show some minor age-related scuffle marks. The stein is standing 10 to the top of the thumblift, 1 L capacity.
