The lid is massive pewter with a porcelain hand-painted inlay and ornate figural thumblift in the form of a horse head - typical late Bied ermeier style of the mid-1800s. The owner was most likely a horse care professional. The hinge is a five-ring open type, this type of the thumblifts appear in the 1870s.The stein is in excellent for the age condition - there are no chips, cracks or even hairlines. The lid is sitting pretty tight.
There are some clay impurities in the body but these are original due to the manual pre-industrial production. The lid show some minor age-related scuffle marks.
