Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer Stein Hunting Scenes Regensburg c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called "Regensburg" type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels - they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them "Model" steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, then they were turned on a potter's wheel to make the insides perfectly round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the 1860s. Please note - the Regensburg type steins were manufactured from 1850 to 1890s in more or less the same form and appearance.

Sometimes we can only date them by the pewter mounts. The stein is decorated with hunting scenes - showing wild animals in the forest and a hunter looking for them.

The stein is in excellent condition for the age. The production of "Model" type stoneware was rough, there are several manufacturing im perfection s and issues including some minor loss of applied elements, firing lines, small caverns , but no damage or repairs. The lid is pewter with a nice figurine of a hunter for the thumblift sitting on the lid. The closed type five-ring hinge along with this form of the lid and thumblift are the clear signs of circa 1850s - 1860s production. The lid engraved with the original owner's name - Jos. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with over 150 years of history behind it. It is 6 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Condition: Excellent with minor manufacturing imperfections.
