Antique German Stoneware Character Beer Stein Rich Man by S. P. Gerz c. 1880
Antique German Stoneware Character Beer Stein by S. Description: This amazing beer stein was manufactured in the 1890s by one of the most famous beer stein manufacturers in Germany - the firm of S. Simon Peter Gerz formed the company that bears his name in 1857, beginning actual production of ceramic wares in 1862. It started with the saltglazed stoneware production, then turned into all kind of ceramics and became one of the major producers of beer steins. This stein belongs to the "character" stein family - beer steins made in form of things or persons. This is probably the most collectible category of antique beer steins. Gerz produced very few of the character steins - his character pieces are quite rare. The stein is made in the form of a ma n dressed in the rich Bavarian outfit. Both Gary Kirsner in his "The Beer Stein Book" and Gene Manusov in his "Encyclopedia of Character Steins" call this stein "Rich M an".
This character was bought for personal use or for a gift as a symbol of prosperity. A similar "Rich Man" character stein was also produced by Merkelbach and Wick, but the Gerz one is superior in quality. There are no marks on the bottom, but according to S. Gerz catalogs, the model number for this one is 261.
This is one of earlier S. Gerz factory production, dating to late 1870-s - 1880s. The stein is in excellent flawless mint condition, no damage, no repairs.
The lid fits perfectly well with no wobbling. It is 7 tall, 0.5L capacity. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
