Antique German Stoneware Character Beer Stein by S. Description: This amazing beer stein was manufactured in the 1880s by one of the most famous beer stein manufacturers in Germany - the firm of S. Simon Peter Gerz formed the company that bears his name in 1857, beginning actual production of ceramic wares in 1862. It started with the saltglazed stoneware production, then turned into all kind of ceramics and became one of the major producers of beer steins. This stein belongs to the "character" stein family - beer steins made in form of things or persons. This is probably the most collectible category of antique beer steins. Gerz produced very few of the character steins - his character pieces are quite rare. The stein is made in the form of a monk with a beard wearing a robe with a rosary on the side.
This stein is different from the many other monk steins - the monk is wearing the hood and his look is not smiling but rather harsh and rigorous. The "monk" character steins were very popular in Germany because usually the monasteries and monks were associated with beer brewing and drinking.
There are no marks on the bottom, but according to S. Gerz catalogs, the model number for this one is 261.The same body with a different head inlay was used for another variation of monk and also the "rich man" stein. This is one of earlier S. Gerz factory production, dating to late 1870-s - 1880s. The stein is in excellent flawless mint condition, no damage, no repairs.
The lid fits perfectly well with no wobbling. It is 7 tall, 0.5L capacity. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. The item "Antique German Stoneware Character Beer Stein Monk by S.
