Antique German Mettlach Etched Beer Stein #2257 Heidelberg c. Description: This beautiful stein was produced by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach over 100 years ago. The exceptionally crafted etched technique decorations show a wonderful view of the city of Heidelberg, with Heidelberg Castle on the hill and the Old Bridge over river Neckar.
The inlaid lid bear the inscription. Old Heidelberg you fine city, rich in honors, on the Neckar and Rhine, no other can equal you. These are the lyrics of an old German poem praising Heidelberg (Translation courtesy of The Beer Stein Library). The bottom of the handle shows a radish - a popular beer snack in Germany. The stein as a part of the series of 3 steins representing Heidelberg, Nuremberg, and Wartburg.
The stein is in excellent flawless condition. It features an interesting lid in form of a tower top.The lid is quite unusual for a Mettlach stein but it no doubts an original one for the stein, most likely a special order lid. It is engraved with the name "Friedrich Grothe".
