Antique German Character Beer Stein Drunken Monk by Duemler/Breiden #654 c. Description: This very unusual German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins - steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called "figural". This particular one was manufactured by Dumler and Breiden - one of the major names in ceramics manufacturing in the Golden Era of beer-stein s pro duction in late 1800-s - early 1900s.It was made around 1901 according to the model number if calculated by the formula provided in "The Beer Stein Library" by Frank Loevi, and is made in a shape of a monk. It was made of very traditional tan pottery and hand-painted. The image of this monk is quite different from usual laughing monks made by many Westerwald manufacturers. This one shows a monk with his eyes half-closed, he is clearly intoxicated, it is more caricature than usual.
It was designed by Peter Duemler who liked to make his characters funny. The inscription reads: Ein gut Gewissen, das best Ruhkissen.A good concience is the best pillow. The stein is in excellent condition. It is a smaller stein - 6 tall, 0.25L capacity. This model was not made in 0.5L. Very interesting and impressive historical beer vessel.
