Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Red Flashed Engraved Friendship c. Description: This very interesting stein was made in the mid-1800s, about the 1850s. It is made of blown crystal glass and copper-wheel engraved - this was a technique that required some serious skills and created beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, my photographs fail to fully reflect the beauty and the craftsmanship involved. There are also three medallions that were red-flashed and engraved with the word "Freundschaft" - "Friendship", and a symbol of crossed anchor and a cross symbolizing the most solid friendship till the grave.

This type of glass beer steins was very common in the 1850s - 1860s. The steins of this kind came mostly from Bohemia. Heavy hand-applied handle, five-ring closed type hinge.

The lid is pewter with kissing doves thumblift typical for the mid-1800s. The kissing doves thumblift was most commonly used for wedding or romantically related steins. So, it is hard to tell what kind of friendship is meant by the inscription. The lid is engraved with the word "Hornung". That could be some person's (the presenter or the owner) last name. Another meaning of this word is the ancient German name for the month of February. The bottom of the stein has an unpolished pontil mark and is decorated with internal bubbles - that was a special technique quite popular in the mid-1800s.

The stein is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs in the body. The handle shows a tension line where it connects to the body at the bottom see my pic. This is a very common issue with manually attached handles.

Please note - this issue is already included in the price. The stein is 6.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/tension line in handle. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Attention Sellers - Get Templates Image Hosting, Scheduling at Auctiva.
