Antique Early German Large Stoneware Beer Stein Kurfurstenkrug Raeren dat. Description: I will be posting today a very early and extremely rare German beer stein/pitcher. It dates back to 1602 and was made in the "Rhineland" - the region in Germany by the river Rhine where traditionally the early stoneware production took place. The most important towns to produce the stoneware were Cologne, Siegburg, Frechen, and Raeren. This absolutely fantastic pouring stein was made in the town of Raeren - one of the most important centers of early stoneware production in Germany. It is made of light brown stoneware with exquisite decorations. The stein is decorated with relief ornaments and hand-incised decorations made by special instruments. The central frieze shows relief portraits of seven Electors or Kurfursts in German - the members of an electoral college that elected the Emperor for the Holy Roman Empire. These Electors were (at the time of the manufacturing) the rulers of Cologne, Bohemia, Brandenburg, Saxony, the Palatinate, Trier, and Mainz. The general name for this type of beer steins in Germany was Mittelfriezekrug (stein with middle frieze), but this particular one is called Kurfurstenkrug. The last picture on the right shows the date - 1602. This is the actual date of manufacturing. I have provided several pictures of some very similar pieces from the German catalogs. The stein is in excellent condition - there are some manufacturing flaws, like glaze misplacing, etc. But no damage or repairs. These steins were very valuable from the time of manufacturing to modern times and were usually kept very carefully. Still, a stein like this with no damage is quite rare. It is a beautiful piece with several centuries behind it!

I guarantee my description and my dating. It is 11.5 tall, approx.
