Early Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Floral Signed BFS c. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main river in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience with very colorful hand-painted decorations. It shows fantasy flowers and fruit - very nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. Nice pewter lid with a large hollow ball for the thumblift.
There is also a massive pewter lip ring and a massive foot ring. The lid shows a medallion with a picture of a soldier on horseback saying farewell to his love one. On the bottom of the stein, you can see a mark - B. This signature was used in 1747 only when the factory owners were Frankel and Schreck. It's is a very rare occasion - just a very small portion of faience stein carry marks like this one.The body of the stein is in good condition - there is no chips or cracks in the body. The handle seems to be broken off and repaired at some point. There are small pieces missing but it is quite solid. The pewter lid is in excellent condition with no breaks or repairs.
This is a good condition for a faience stein this old - faience is a very fragile material, most of the remaining faience pieces have some sort of damage. A beautiful antique vessel standing 10 tall to the top of the thumblift.
Condition: Good - see description.
