Large Early Austrian Faience Beer Stein - Gmunden c. Description: Presented is a very old Austrian beer stein made in mid-19th century - around 18 60s. The stein was made in the factory of Gmunden - now its a small town in north Austria that was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of slightly reddish clay with tin-based white glaze.
It is decorated with a hand-painted picture of a cheerful man in Tyrolean attire with a beer stein in one hand and a glass in another. The decoration is one of several typical Gmunden decors. Very nice and delicate, it creates very li vely look. The stein is in perfect condition for the age - it has no cracking or chipping. Very rare thing for the early faience.The lid is totally intact - no damage at all. It is a typcal 1860s kind of lid - it has the urn -shaped thumblift common for 1820s-1840s and 3-ring open hinge that became popul a r in 1870s. The lid is engraved with a presentation inscripti on and dated 1867. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 L capacity.
